Estimating Your Expenses
The estimated expenses that appear below are meant to represent an AVERAGE cost for an international student enrolled full-time. Specific personal circumstances will not be taken into account when determining this amount. The proof of finances you must show is based upon the expenses for the average student and NOT on your specific number of credits, housing costs, etc.
J-1 students, please reference the J-1 Proof of Finances form for full details.

Graduate Student with Assistantship
Average expenses are calculated based upon the most current academic year Cost of Attendance Tables established by the ISU Financial Aid Office and the most current Tuition Rate Tables published by Student Accounts. Please refer to your GA contract for details regarding which costs are covered and for what time period. You will need to submit a copy of your GA contract when you submit your proof of finances.
In most cases, your GA tuition waiver and stipend will NOT cover your full estimated expenses. To determine how much more funding you will need to show, take the total amount listed from the options below and subtract your stipend for the same time period. Please see the following examples.
One Semester Calculation:
Total Estimated Expenses = $9,816
- Monthly Stipend = $1,400 × 4.5 = $6,300 (This value will vary depending on your stipend)
= $3,516 (you will need to show this amount from an additional funding source)
Two Semester Calculation:
Total Estimated Expenses = $19,632
- Monthly Stipend = $1,400 × 9 = $12,600 (This value will vary depending on your stipend)
= $7,032 (you will need to show this amount from an additional funding source)
