SEVIS Transfer Out

If you are a current Illinois State scholar who will be transferring to another U.S. institution to continue your program, you may be eligible to transfer your SEVIS record. A SEVIS transfer allows you to transfer your J-1 record from one school to another.

Am I eligible for a SEVIS transfer?

  • I have been invited to take part in a scholar program at another institution.
  • I will continue within the same J-1 category and program objectives at the new institution.
  • I am in valid J-1 status and requesting the SEVIS transfer before the end date on my current DS-2019.
  • The transfer will not extend my program beyond the maximum duration for my J-1 category.

How do I request a SEVIS transfer?

Step 1: Contact the international office at your new school to notify them of your intent to transfer your SEVIS record. Inform them that you will need the following documents in order to request the transfer of your SEVIS record.

  • Official letter of invitation for the new institution which includes specifics of the scholar program
  • Transfer In Form for the new institution (if they have one)

Step 2: Login to the ISSS Scholar Portal. Your username is your Illinois State email address and your login is unique to this portal. If you have forgotten your password for the portal, please click on "Forgot your password?" at the bottom of the login page. If you continue to have trouble logging in, please email arwagon@IllinoisState.edu.

Step 3: Click on the "Requests" tab within your scholar profile and select SEVIS Transfer Out from the list of available requests.

Step 4: Read the entire request form, complete all fields, and upload all relevant documents before submitting your request.
